An Alabama Notary Public is authorized to charge $10 for each signature acknowledged (notarized) and for each notarial act performed. Notaries who travel to meet clients can charge an extra fee or fees to compensate for travel expenses. Alabama does not set limits on what a notary can charge for travel.
While a notary journal is not state-required in Alabama, it is highly recommended. Maintaining an up-to-date journal helps prevent fraud and serves as an official record of all notarizations for future reference.
The revised Notary Public Act in Alabama becomes effective on September 1, 2023. One notable change is that a notary public is prohibited from performing an acknowledgment in any transaction where they have a pecuniary interest.
