What is a California Notary Public?
A California notary public is a third-party witness to the signing of legal documents. A Notary helps to prevent fraud by checking signer’s identification and watching for signer’s willingness to sign the documents. Every power of attorney, grant deed, quitclaim deed, loan signing, home sale, refinance, deed of trust, living will and trust and more… requires the signature and stamp of the notary public. Not even going into additional documents. Can you imagine how many documents get notarized every day? 1000’s. A notary public cannot take an acknowledgment on a document that is incomplete. When presented with a document containing a signature to be notarized, the notary public should visually scan the document to determine if the document is complete. Blank spaces and blank lines should be examined to ensure information is not missing. Also, if a notary public has experience with a particular type of document, and knows what information should be stated in the document, and that information is missing or incomplete, the notary public must refuse to notarize the signature.
