If you have lost your stamp or your journal, you will need to contact the Secretary of State in the state where you are commissioned as a notary public.
What to do if you’ve lost notary stamp:
When you contact the secretary of state, be sure to include all of your information. For example, have:
- Letting them know of your lost notary stamp
- Commission name.
- Commission number
- Request for a new certificate
- lastly, your signature.
Next, request a certificate. Use these steps:
A certificate of authorization is used to replace notary stamps. To request a new certificate with your mailing, you must indicate, “I am requesting a new certificate of authorization to purchase a new seal.”

Upon written request, the Secretary of State will send a duplicate certificate of authorization so you can replace your notary stamp.
So, what to do if you’ve lost notary journal:

- Dates covered in your notary journal
- lastly, a police report (when applied)
Please note: you can not reuse the notary journal if found. Notary journals must be stored under the exclusive control of the notary public.
